Martial Arts Teaches Focus
Many think martial arts is about kicking and punching, but there is so much more that martial arts teaches in our hectic multi-media world.
For starters, martial arts teaches creating a strong positive mind set which increases good habits, thereby resulting in positive decisions and creating the right actions. For beginners, one of the first areas of growth is the energy to maintain FOCUS throughout the day. These skills are not only martial arts, but more importantly, LIFE SKILLS. One accomplishes what one focuses on in life. Increasing a one’s ability to focus, increases our list of personal victories and accomplishments and that can change our lives.
When striking a target or breaking a board, students do not focus on the surface of the target but see through the target. Their goal is not to accomplish minimum standards but to exceed minimum standards. The act of penetrating a target is the goal of surpassing minimum standards and accomplishing new personal heights.
All the training seek to motivate responsive actions in thinking through building reflexes and confidence. Part of the focus training is to seek to motivate to build mental reflexes and become more responsive with our mind, heart, and body. Some of the external signs are seeing our focus increase is responsive eye contact, acknowledging communications, and our ability to initiate verbal responses. Many adults start to take pride in their personal strength to take care of themselves instead of being taken care of. Adults begin to see themselves in a different relationship with the world.
Through fine tuning focus and mindset, students in martial arts learn to tune out distractions, prioritize demands, feel confident while struggling to a new level, look for the comebacks with setbacks, and push outside comfort zones to grow. Martial arts helps adults understand the value of challenging themselves and others, knowing when to support others, and how to enjoy success. These are all the benefits adults accomplish in the martial arts every day.
